La Clinica de las Buenas Nuevas was born out of the call of God on the life of Dr. Jana Nisly.  After finishing medical school, she investigated the medical needs in Central America.  She and the local missionaries visited various villages in El Salvador, and consulted the government to find a location where a clinic services would complement, rather than compete with, existing medical facilities.  The clinic opened in April 1993, and sought to communicate the good news of Jesus Christ though medical and spiritual care, social services, and personal relationships with clients who previously had inadequate access to this kind of care.

Dr. Jana Nisly and Marietta Yoder staffed the clinic from its inception, aided by a local community member trained to be receptionist. By September 1993 the patient load had increased to the point that a second community member was hired to be trained in as a lab assistant. She has become a valued member of our staff who is still with us today.  Increasing patient demands led to further additions to the clinic staff as community people were trained to fill needed roles in the clinic health care programs. Currently the clinic is staffed by a US-trained Family Physician, 2 North American nurses,  a North American counselor, and 6 Salvadoran lay persons who function in various roles under immediate supervision of trained staff n the clinic.

Through the years the clinic has been joined by medical students, nursing students, and college students who have visited in order to experience mission medicine and have joined in patient care as their skills allowed. Volunteer physicians and a dentist from the United States have shared their time and expertise at various junctures, releasing the staff for furloughs and other duties.

Established: 1993: a locally-owned house was bought and reconstructed to form the basis of the clinic structure. An outdoor kitchen was demolished and a rut-bound driveway paved for vehicle access to the clinic. The clinic was furnished with equipment and medications donated by medical friends in the United States.
